Real Work That Matters: Celebrating PM Modi’s Historic Milestone and Over Two Decades of Dedicated Service
In an era of constant scrutiny, every milestone for Prime Minister Narendra Modi sparks debate, often centring on controversies or unmet expectations. Yet amid the noise, the most compelling story is rarely told: the steady, on-the-ground work that has transformed everyday lives across India.
Today, March 22, 2026, marks a defining moment. PM Modi has become India’s longest-serving head of an elected government, surpassing the record of former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling (24 years and 165 days, or 8,930 days). With 8,931 days of continuous service, this achievement spans his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister (from October 7, 2001) and Prime Minister.

This isn’t merely about longevity – it’s about consistent leadership through crises, from the 2001 Gujarat earthquake to a global pandemic, delivering results that reach the last mile.
Roots in Gujarat: Building Foundations for National Progress
Modi ji’s journey began amid disaster. Appointed Gujarat CM after the devastating 2001 earthquake, he prioritized reconstruction, reliable power and water, investor-friendly policies via Vibrant Gujarat summits, and efficient governance. These efforts turned Gujarat into an economic powerhouse and seeded national initiatives.
What began as “Make in Gujarat” evolved into “Make in India,” boosting local manufacturing, because of which, today, India produces ~99% of its mobile phones domestically, fuelled by Production Linked Incentive schemes. Gujarat’s steady GSDP growth under his watch exemplified scalable, people-centric development.

Transformative Achievements Touching Millions
These decades have delivered measurable change:
- Sanitation and Dignity: Swachh Bharat Mission, building on Gujarat’s Nirmal Gujarat, constructed over 12 crore household toilets, declaring India open defecation-free and improving health, especially for women and girls.

Housing Security: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has sanctioned over 1.25 crore houses (with millions completed and handed over), providing pucca homes to the poor—many titled to women—for stability and dignity.

- Clean Energy for Homes: Ujjwala Yojana delivered LPG connections to crores of poor households, replacing hazardous chulhas and reducing women’s drudgery.
- Healthcare Shield: Ayushman Bharat offers up to ₹5 lakh coverage per family, with over 43 crore cards issued, protecting millions from catastrophic medical expenses (expanded recently to all seniors 70+).
- Financial Empowerment: Jan Dhan opened hundreds of millions of bank accounts; Direct Benefit Transfer eliminated leakages; PM-KISAN provides direct support to farmers; schemes like Har Ghar Jal and free rations ensure essentials reach remote areas.
- Digital Revolution: UPI has made India the global leader in digital payments, bringing transparent, instant services – from pensions to scholarships – to villages.

- Infrastructure Boom: National highways expanded from ~91,000 km in 2014 to over 1.46 lakh km today. Construction speed tripled (from ~12 km/day to ~34 km/day), airports grew from 74 to over 160, and high-speed trains like Vande Bharat revolutionized travel. Bharatmala continues connecting underserved regions.
- Defence and Self-Reliance: Defence exports surpassed ₹21,000 crore; Atmanirbhar Bharat turned vision into reality through reforms like GST (unifying India’s market) and structural changes.
These successes demanded persistence, navigating economic reforms, global challenges, and the world’s largest vaccination drive during COVID.
Why This Milestone Resonates
Governing diverse India for so long requires resilience and focus on the people. The true measure? How many families now have cleaner homes, better health, financial security, and connectivity.
